The movement endeavours to ensure that a fair amount of profits remain in the estates, providing education and medical clinics for the workers. For further information visit fairtrade.org.uk
It is believed a little knowledge will make each cup more enjoyable...
• Tea comes from the Camellia Sinensis plant, and the difference from the main varieties are in the preparation.
• Tea is the second most consumed beverage in the world next to water.
• Canadians drink more than nine (9) billions cups of tea yearly.
• Chinese legend has it that tea was discovered in 2737 BC by Emperor Shen Nung. A tea leaf accidentally fell into a bowl of hot water that he was drinking and he found it to his liking.
• Caffeine a problem... Steep tea for 30 seconds. Drain water. Add fresh hot water and steep for suggested time. Cuts caffeine content by 50 – 70%. For a true decaffeinated beverage, it is recommended that you purchase decaffeinated tea.
• Porcelain teapots maintain temperatures for a longer period of time.
• The first tea shipment to arrive in Canada was imported by the Hudson’s Bay Company in 1716.
• Yelling for 8 years, 7 months and 6 days would generate enough energy to heat a cup of tea.
• Jasmine tea is produced by layering premium spring leaf with jasmine during production, originating from the Sung Dynasty 800 years ago.
• Many of our teas contain "rosehip". Rosehip is particularly high in Vitamin C, with about 1700-2000mg per 100g in the dried product. It also contains vitamins A, D and E, essential fatty acids and antioxidant flavonoids. Besides being used as a remedy for rheumatoid arthritis, dizziness and headaches, it is commonly used externally in oil form to restore firmness to skin by nourishing tissue source: BBC News, June 18, 2007.
• Tea contains more caffeine than coffee - a pound of coffee makes approximately 40 cups, a pound of tea 150-200 cups, proving there is far less caffeine in tea than coffee.
• The tea bag was invented by accident. In 1908 a New York City tea importer, Thomas Sullivan, needed to cut costs when sending out samples of his teas. Rather than send a costly tin and the larger amounts of leaves, he placed smaller amounts into small silk purses. The merchants were impressed with this tidy, premeasured, self-straining bag and under the impression this was a new way to prepare tea, began to order the small silk bags.
• Do the planet a favour - serve loose tea. Loose tea has a much smaller environmental impact than teabags. Teabags require paper, staple, plastic tag etc. Although per bag the material may seem insignificant, multiplied by billions annually, loose tea is a much friendlier option and the added bonus - tastes much better!
